Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Sandy Berger

Hillary and I were deeply saddened by the passing of our friend Sandy Berger and our hearts go out to Susan and his children.

We knew and admired Sandy for more than 40 years, beginning with the McGovern campaign in 1972. He was a trusted advisor to my campaign for President and an essential member of our national security team afterward. Nobody was more knowledgeable about policy or smarter about how to formulate it. He was great both in analyzing a situation and figuring out what to do about it. His gifts proved invaluable time and time again, in Latin America, the Balkans, Northern Ireland and the Middle East.

Sandy was a consummate National Security Advisor because he embraced our common humanity and advanced our national interests. He worked for what was best for America and for ordinary people at home and abroad. He was a terrific public servant and a world class human being. We will miss him.

Samuel R. Berger, a political confidant of President Bill Clinton who became his national security adviser in his second term, died on Wednesday in Washington. He was 70.
From Our Advertisers

His death was announced by Tara Sonenshine, his longtime aide and friend. Mr. Berger, who was known as Sandy, was given a cancer diagnosis more than a year ago.

On Tuesday, he wrote to his colleagues at the Albright Stonebridge Group, an international consulting firm he ran with former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright, that his condition had worsened and that “time is not on my side.”

Farewell, Sandy Berger, the Clinton Man Who Stopped Armageddon

In his finest hour, he averted a nuclear war between Pakistan and India. Sandy Berger, who died this morning, was a gentleman who knew how to handle a head of government.

SNIP

Sandy Berger believed that the White House was a special place to work. He told his staff that if they were not a bit awed by where they worked anymore, it was time to leave. He quietly noted that his team played through injury. His dedication was complete.

He was also a gentleman. The interagency process is inherently a tough world with lots of big personalities. Getting them to work as a team is challenging and requires nonstop effort. Sandy was good at it. He will be missed.

Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Dale Bumpers

Dale Bumpers was a governor of profound historical importance, the most eloquent defender of our constitution in the Senate, a man who put his considerable gifts of wisdom, wit, and passion to work for the common good.

For more than 40 years Hillary and I cherished his friendship. I am grateful that his advice made me a better governor and President, and that we laughed at each other’s jokes even when we’d heard them before. And I’m grateful that he welcomed Hillary to Arkansas and supported her in Washington.

As governor, he gave us the revenue system that made modernization possible, especially in education. As Senator he had the courage to vote against both the tax cuts and spending increases that exploded our national debt, increased inequality, and slowed growth. He championed efforts to protect the environment throughout his career. And first, last, and always he defended the constitution—its rights, responsibilities, and rules. Thanks to Dale Bumpers and David Pryor I never felt far from home.

I loved him. I loved learning from him and laughing with him. I will miss him very much. Our hearts go out to Betty, Brent, Bill, and Brooke, and all the Bumpers clan.

8th Annual Hillary Clinton Year in Review: Installment XII December 2016

With the election over and dissatisfaction widespread, the Clinton campaign team joined in the recounts asking specifically for help in Michigan and Wisconsin.

Hillary, meanwhile, when not trekking in the woods, was socializing with her neighbors and looking fine.

Time Magazine named her “Number 2 Top Influencer.”  She actually won the popular vote by readers for “Person of the Year,” but, like the electors, the magazine’s top brass chose Trump.

Randol Schoenberg sued the FBI for the warrant that was used to examine a laptop belonging to Anthony Weiner for Hillary’s emails.

Hillary returned to Capitol Hill to celebrate Harry Reid’s retirement.

12-08-16-tw-01

The electors requested a background briefing on the Russian interference in the election. It was not granted.

Hillary continued making some social rounds.

The electors met and elected Donald Trump. Judge Kevin Castel unsealed the warrant that Randol Schoenberg requested.  Schoenberg found the probable cause flimsy.

Hillary stuck around home with her best guy over Christmas weekend. They attended services near home.

12-24-16-tw-01

Hillary sent a holiday message the leads us to expect to hear more from her in the future. She also topped Gallup’s Most Admired Women List again.

She spent the week between Christmas and New Year’s on a little vacation in the hill just north of home. We wish Hillary and her family the happiest and healthiest of New Years.

Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of Chuck Berry

Hillary and I loved Chuck Berry for as long as we can remember. The man was inseparable from his music – both were utterly original and distinctly American. He made our feet move and our hearts more joyful. And along the way he changed our country and the history of popular music. Chuck played at both my inaugurations and at the White House for my 25th Georgetown reunion, and he never slowed down, which is why his legend grew every time he stepped on stage. His life was a treasure and a triumph, and he’ll never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to his family and his countless friends and fans.

Statement from President Clinton and Secretary Clinton on the Passing of David Rockefeller

Statement

David Rockefeller was a consummate businessman, a great humanitarian, and a serious scholar. He was a kind, good man to all who met him. Hillary and I are grateful for his friendship and his remarkable life.
Throughout his life he used his fame and fortune to do good here and abroad. His many efforts included the establishment of the Council of the Americas five decades ago, which was instrumental in my administration’s efforts to alleviate the financial crisis in Latin America and boost trade in the Americas and the Caribbean. His tremendous support of arts and humanities in America gave millions of people in communities across the country the opportunity to experience our great heritage of painting, dance, music, and so much more. For these efforts and many others, I was proud to present him with our nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

We celebrate a long life well-lived and send our gratitude and prayers to his family and all who supported him on his remarkable journey.

Statement from President Clinton on the Passing of Martin McGuinness

Statement

Hillary and I were saddened to learn of the death of Martin McGuinness, who devoted his life to his beloved Northern Ireland. When he decided to fight for peace, Martin was calm, courageous, and direct. And when he gave his word, that was as good as gold. As Sinn Fein’s chief negotiator, his integrity and willingness to engage in principled compromise were invaluable in reaching the Good Friday Agreement. In the years that followed, he played an even more important role in ensuring that the peace would last—personally overseeing the arms decommissioning, joining the new government as the first Education Minister, and later serving as Deputy First Minister, and doing it all with a sense of humor and fairness that inspired both his friends and former foes. My lasting memory of him will be the pride he took in his efforts to improve disadvantaged schools in Unionist and Protestant communities. He believed in a shared future, and refused to live in the past, a lesson all of us who remain should learn and live by.  May he rest in peace.

Bill and Hillary Clinton Talk ‘Fun Deficits’ at Star-Studded Charity Gala

Hillary Clinton, special guest at Tuesday night’s SeriousFun Children’s Network Gala, knew just the right antidote for her trying political year.

“I’m looking for some serious fun,” she confessed to the crowd gathered inside New York’s Pier Sixty at Chelsea Piers. “I have a big fun deficit.”

Clinton offered her services as a counselor for the global community of camps — founded by late actor Paul Newman in 1988, to serve children with serious illnesses — and her personnel suggestions didn’t stop there. “I know of a really good guy who might also fit in when it comes to serious fun. I’m all for hiring guys for the right jobs,” she added, to much cheer.

Out stepped Bill Clinton, another eager counselor volunteer. “This is one of those jobs, unlike some of them, where it helps to have experience,” he joked, before addressing his wife. “Having been counseling with you now for over 40 years, I’d be perfect for these kids because it doesn’t bother me anymore if nobody takes my advice!”

Last year, we all were so sure that this year she would be at Arlington laying wreaths. That was not to be. But despite the rain and chilly temps, Hillary marched in Chappaqua today with former President Bill Clinton and Governor Andrew Cuomo. The pipes and drums braved the weather in their rain gear. Our friend Oscar Flores marched too, as always!

Clintons See ‘Come From Away’– Audience Cheers ‘Hillary!’

If you’ve seen a Broadway show in the last six months or so, there’s a significant chance you saw a surprise double bill: the play or musical you paid for and a celebrity cameo by Hillary Clinton, smiling politely as the audience gave her another standing ovation. On Thursday, the former Democratic nominee, her husband Bill, and her daughter Chelsea attended a performance of Come From Away, a musical about the roughly 7,000 air travelers grounded in Gander, Newfoundland, after planes were rerouted following the aerial attacks on 9/11. Christopher Ashley took home a Tony for Best Direction for the production earlier this month.

The musical’s co-writer David Hein later praised the Clintons, who posed for photos with the cast, on Facebook. Hein wrote in part, “So many lines in the show resonated differently — especially the scene where passengers try to vote for a different destination and are told, “this is not a democracy.” Afterwards onstage, they were so gracious, taking pictures and speaking to each of us. President Clinton told Caesar one of his 9/11 stories, when he met a Muslim man who was afraid his countrymen would never trust him again. We and Sharon got to introduce our daughters to Chelsea. And Hilary told us, ‘this is a show that the world needs now.’ So honoured to have this story of Newfoundland kindness recognized and celebrated by them.”

World leaders bid farewell to ‘patriot’ Helmut Kohl

The former German chancellor was remembered as both a German and European patriot, who paved the way to a united Europe.

UK, Saturday 01 July 2017

Helmut Kohl is considered one of the great architects of the European Union

Past and present world leaders have bid farewell to Helmut Kohl, the German chancellor who helped unite Europe.

Mr Kohl, who died aged 87 on 16 June, was remembered as both a German and European patriot, who deserved “a place of honour in the European pantheon”.

The former chancellor becomes the first person to be honoured with an official memorial event by the European Union in the French city of Strasbourg.

Among the many dignitaries present at the memorial was former US president Bill Clinton, who thanked Kohl for giving “us the chance to be involved in something bigger than ourselves”.

“Bigger than our terms of office, bigger than our fleeting careers,” he said.

“Because all of us, sooner or later, will be in a coffin like that,” he added.

“And the only gift we can leave behind, is a better future for our children, and the freedom to do their own choices. Including their own mistakes.”

The 70-year-old politician said his wife, Hillary Clinton, said he loved Mr Kohl “because he was the only person with a bigger appetite for food than I have”.

“The 20th century in Europe really began on his watch,” Mr Clinton added.

Louise Penny is also staying at the resort with them. She visited with them at their Chappaqua home back in March.
