While two new honors for Hillary were announced today, (big ones see the two previous posts),  President Clinton was in Washington helping to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” speech. The picture is of Presidents Carter, Clinton, Obama, and First Lady Michelle Obama at the entrance to the Lincoln Memorial. It was quite a day!

Clinton hails poet Seamus Heaney

Former US president Bill Clinton has praised Seamus Heaney as “our finest poet of the rhythms of ordinary lives” and a “powerful voice for peace”.

The farmer’s son who went on to become a world renowned Nobel laureate died in hospital in Dublin aged 74.

Mr Clinton and his wife Hillary said they were saddened to learn of the death of their “friend”.

“Both his stunning work and his life were a gift to the world. His mind, heart, and his uniquely Irish gift for language made him our finest poet of the rhythms of ordinary lives and a powerful voice for peace. And he was a good and true friend,” the Clintons said.

“We loved him and we will miss him. More than a brilliant artist, Seamus was, from the first day we met him, a joy to be with and a warm and caring friend – in short, a true son of Northern Ireland. His wonderful work, like that of his fellow Irish Nobel Prize winners Shaw, Yeats, and Beckett, will be a lasting gift for all the world.”

Look Out Ahead! Clinton Interviews Coming Up!

Both Bill and Hillary Clinton are talking to the media, but before everyone jumps to 2016 conclusions,  let’s understand that we are likely to be seeing Clintons on the horizon with some frequency over the upcoming week as they host heavy hitters from all over the globe at the 2013 Clinton Global InitiativeLive feeds will be streamed here.

This will be the first year that Hillary will be able to participate fully since accepting the post of Secretary of State.   Over the past four years she did make time to address participants but was otherwise occupied during the week representing all of us at the U.N. General Assembly.  She will not be subject to that obligation this year,  and we can all be assured that both her husband and her daughter will be thrilled to have her aboard for the long run this time around.

06-14-13-Z-02

For starters, we can look forward, on Sunday, to seeing former President Clinton (and informal Obama Administration “Secretary of Explaining Stuff”) with Fareed Zakaria on CNN’s GPS discussing the  Syrian weapons deal.  Most assuredly he will be granting other interviews in the course of the week likely on morning and evening news broadcasts.

Meanwhile,  Hillary’s first interview with the print media since leaving the State Department will be available when New York Magazine hits the stands on Monday coinciding with the opening of CGI according to Politico.

After an eight-month hiatus, Hillary Clinton is talking to the media again.

Earlier this month, the former Secretary of State and likely 2016 presidential candidate sat down with New York Magazine’s Joe Hagan for her first major interview since leaving the State Department on Feb. 1, POLITICO has learned.

The interview is expected to be published in print and online on Monday, the first day of the annual Clinton Global Initiative meeting in New York. All three Clintons — Hillary, former President Bill, and daughter Chelsea — are featured speakers at the event.

A Clinton spokesperson declined to comment on the interview; Hagan did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

We know that Mme. Secretary has been working assiduously out of camera range getting her own initiative, Too Small to Fail, organized and off the ground.  A joint effort between the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation and Next Generation Too Small to Fail is dedicated to the health and well being of children aged 0-5.   Yesterday, the foundation announced the formation of leadership and advisory councils for the initiative, and we can be sure that Hillary and her team will be diving into their projects over the coming week.

Even when she is not in front of the camera lenses,  our Hillary seems to be in the news and on our screens with great regularity due to all the 2016 speculation, but it will be wonderful to see her addressing and explaining her new endeavors.  She, as we all know, is an excellent “explainer” herself!

In the very local news,  Bill and Hillary Clinton, who remained mute on the mayoral primaries in New York City due to their friends on both sides of the aisle who were involved, have finally broken their collective silence with an endorsement that comes as no surprise whatsoever.

De Blasio is a former aide in the Clinton Administration and he was the campaign manager for Hillary Clinton’s Senate run in 2000.

From Hillary Clinton’s Too Small to Fail: Catching Up

When Bill Clinton appeared on Ellen yesterday,  he spoke about Too Small to Fail.   Over the course of the campaign cycle,  several newsletters came through from Too Small to Fail, but, in an effort to keep readers apprised of Hillary’s campaign appearances, I held off on posting them so as not to crowd too many posts here.

Since President Clinton seemed to imply that this message is perhaps more important than any campaign, I guess it is high time we played catch-up here.  These are the messages that were on hold.

A Village Turns Out to Close the Word Gap

This past year has been an important one for Too Small to Fail. We’ve built new partnerships and made many new friends along the way. The truth is that many dedicated people are working on closing the word gap around the country—from hospitals to churches, community centers to early learning facilities—but our emerging work together has helped to elevate the importance of talking, reading and singing to children from birth in order to build young brains and change the future of America. And we’re starting to see great results.

Last week, Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke at the annual American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) conference in San Diego. During her speech, she announced the launch of the AAP’s updated early literacy toolkit for pediatricians and parents, which provides information and tips for doctors to speak with parents about early brain development and why talking, reading and singing regularly to children from birth helps their health and well-being. The toolkit is titled “Books Build Connections,” and was developed in partnership with Too Small to Fail. It is available online for free at www.aap.org/literacy.

We then made our way to Dreamforce 2014, an annual multi-day software and technology conference produced by Salesforce in San Francisco. At Dreamforce, hundreds of volunteers joined Secretary Clinton, Marc Benioff and our partners UPS, Bay Area Council, UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Goodby Silverstein & Partners to stuff thousands of tote bags with books, CDs, clothes, and other materials. The tote bags are part of our “Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing” campaign, and will go to families in Oakland to help them close the word gap.

Finally, we wrapped our week up in Washington DC, where we gathered with more than 100 federal agency representatives, early childhood advocates, pediatricians, city mayors and many others to announce new initiatives, discuss ways that communities are tackling the problem of the word gap, and to share new research about language development. It was an inspiring and informative day, and participants left energized to take on the word gap in new ways.

We couldn’t do what we do without our partners, but also without the parents, caregivers and caring communities that want to help our next generation of children succeed. Thank you for all that you do, and we continue to look forward to our work together.

Why Talking Math Matters

Counting steps to the mailbox. Pointing out how much bigger a tree is compared to a sapling. Identifying the shapes of houses, road signs or other objects around you.  These are all ways that parents introduce math concepts into the learning of very young children. Early math can be fun and easy, and both parents and children benefit from the shared experience of talking about the math that surrounds us.

According to the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, approximately 1 in 5 adults in the United States has difficulty understanding middle-school math. Unfortunately, this difficulty with math translates into difficulty managing many important tasks—like following recipes and calculating change. Familiarity with early mathematical concepts paves the way for more complicated mathematical and logical thinking in adulthood, which can be helpful in jobs and in other areas of adult life.

Studies have found that the more early math concepts children are familiar with by the time they enter school, the more likely they are to do well in math and other subjects later on. Much like vocabulary and early language skills, early math skills develop from infancy through simple interactions with loved ones. Early math is much more than just counting, however. Parents and caregivers can help their children develop an appreciation of math by using opportunities throughout the day to talk about math concepts like numbers, size order and shapes.

Parents can help their children learn to love math by incorporating math talk into every day activities and by encouraging their children to talk math back. No matter your comfort with middle-school math, working early math language into your day with your children is easy to do and will help them in the long run.

Fathers Are Not Just For Playtime

The role and meaning of fathers has changed over time. Fathers are taking care of children now more than ever before. In fact, the time that fathers spend weekly on child care has more than tripled since 1965. And the traditional term “father” more broadly now refers to trusted male figures (e.g. grandfathers, uncles, and mentors) who also play a vital role in the growth and development of a child. Just like mothers, fathers help very young children develop skills that benefit social, emotional and cognitive growth.

Starting from birth, fathers play a powerful role in helping their babies form close emotional bonds built on love and trust. Infants who are securely attached to their parents or caregivers are better able to self-regulate their emotions and more likely to develop positive relationships with their peers and other adults. There are simple and everyday actions that fathers can take—like reading or singing to a baby, stroking a baby’s forehead, or being responsive to a baby’s cries—to promote bonding and attachment.

A series of studies have emerged in recent years that outline the unique and positive role that fathers play in their children’s health and development. For example, children who have involved and nurturing fathers demonstrate higher language and cognitive abilities and fare better in school. They also show higher self-esteem and more sociable behavior towards their peers.

Dads tend to play with their children in different ways than moms, but both parents play important roles in their young children’s lives. And fathers—biological or not—are important contributors to their children’s development in many different ways.

Hocus-Pocus, Time to Focus!

If you watch several preschoolers for a while, you may notice a difference in the way they focus on activities like dressing themselves or stacking blocks. Some may have long enough attention spans to quickly complete the tasks at hand, while some may get frustrated or distracted and give up early. The ability of young children to manage tasks like these is related to what researchers call “executive function” of the brain—the ability to control impulses, to concentrate for long periods of time, and to master complicated tasks.

Executive function develops in infancy, and is responsible for helping our brains manage multiple streams of information at the same time. In children, executive function governs self-control and concentration. As children grow into adulthood, these skills help them with a number of activities including managing stress, memorization, following instructions, problem solving and regulating emotions. Researchers have found that children with poorly developed executive function tend to have more behavioral problems and difficulty in school, whereas children with highly developed executive function know how to focus on tasks at hand and get along well with others. According to some studies, highly developed executive function is a better predictor of academic achievement than IQ.

Many factors play a critical role in the development of executive function, and parents can help young children develop these skills in simple ways early on. For example, by establishing routines, parents and caregivers can help children feel secure and learn how to manage their emotions. Games that encourage following rules—like “Simon Says”—or that encourage memorization also improve executive function. And the more that parents talk, read and sing to their children, the more children learn how to communicate their thoughts effectively with adults and peers.

Dual language learning can also help with executive function by training the brain to juggle multiple ideas and vocabulary simultaneously. With practice and plenty of love from parents and caregivers, children can learn the skills they will need to succeed in life.

Statement by President Clinton, Secretary Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton on World AIDS Day 2014

Statement

Not very long ago, it would have been hard to imagine that there would ever be an AIDS-free generation. Now we’re moving toward it with remarkable partnerships all over the world.

This year, 13 million people around the world are receiving life-saving AIDS drugs and treatment, including 8.2 million with access to lower prices as a result of negotiations by the Clinton Health Access Initiative. Mother to child transmissions are down in many countries, more children are on treatment, and health systems in developing nations are being improved to advance both prevention and treatment. None of this could have been achieved without the work and commitment of caring people around the globe, including colleagues and friends who died when Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 crashed in July en route to the 20th International AIDS Conference in Melbourne.

But there is still so much to do. This year roughly 1.5 million individuals died of HIV-related illnesses, and over 2 million were newly infected.

UNAIDS launched new targets in 2014 – that by 2020, 90% of all people living with HIV will know their status, 90% of those diagnosed will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy, and 90% of those receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression. While these are ambitious goals, we believe they can be achieved and will remain committed to doing our part.

The theme of this year’s World AIDS Day is right on target: “Focus, Partner, Achieve: an AIDS-free generation.”  If we remain steadfast in our dedication to finding smart ways to work together, we will prevail.

Let’s join , & in fighting for an AIDS-free future for girls. More here:

Dear Friend,

I’ve seen Bill take on many roles over the years — from father to grandfather, from public servant to philanthropist — but everything he’s done in his life has been tied together in his belief that if we work together, tomorrow can be better than today.

When Bill left the White House, he opened the Clinton Presidential Center in Little Rock, Arkansas with a vision to continue his life’s work of strengthening communities and empowering people everywhere to live their best life story.

This year we’re marking a full 10 years since the Clinton Presidential Center first opened its doors.

On behalf of the Clinton Foundation, I want to invite you to commemorate this moment, and to thank Bill for the lifetime of service that I hope you admire as much as I do.

Click here to send a personal note of congratulations to Bill to celebrate 10 years of the Clinton Presidential Center.

Bill has devoted his life to making sure people everywhere can achieve their dreams, whether it’s increasing access to life-saving HIV/AIDS medicine in Africa, helping children here in the United States live healthier lifestyles and overcome obesity, or helping more people in more places around the world get access to clean water, clean air, education, and economic opportunity. Bill has always believed we have to put people first, and that’s still at the core of the work we do here at the Clinton Foundation and at the Clinton Presidential Center. The measure is simple — are people better off than when we started? For millions around the world, the answer is yes.

I hope you’ll join me in saying thank you and congratulations on 10 years of the Clinton Presidential Center.

Send your personal note of celebration today.

Sincerely,

Hillary Rodham Clinton

Yesterday, President Clinton welcomed world leaders to a Future of the Americas Summit at the University of Miami.  Emilio and Gloria Estefan participated in the event and later welcomed President and Secretary Clinton as guests of honor at a fundraiser at their home.  There are no photos, but there is a brief video along with this report.

Clinton Meets With Estefans After Holding Summit

Following the daylong meeting, Clinton and his wife Hillary were the guests of honor at a fundraiser at the Star Island home of Gloria and Emilio Estefan.

“President Clinton, when he left office in 2001, still thought he hadn’t done enough, and thought as a private citizen he would like to do what he can,” Gloria Estefan said of the former Commander in Chief.

Emilio Estefan added, “Doesn’t matter if you’re Republican or Democrat, you bring everybody together.”

Hillary Clinton thanked the hosts, saying “They have lent their talents and voices in so many ways to try to bring people together. To do exactly as you quote Bill saying 20 years ago. So we’re grateful to you for all that you have done for so many.”
